Odin’s ravens: Hugin (thought) and Munin (memory) fly all over Midgard to bring information to the Allfather. They are associated as blessings from Odin, evoking the swiftness of the raven with the sharpness of its beak to protect the wearer from all evil.
After the ravens, the wolves were the second animal created by the Allfather: according to the sagas, at the beginning of time Odin roamed the nine realms alone, as one day he felt lonely. That is when he created the first wolves: Geri and Freki. Odin and his loyal wolves quickly became inseparable as they traveled the world together.
Geri and Freki, however, were always hungry, and couldn’t find enough prey for themselves when hunting. One day they decided to join forces with Hugin and Munin for a hunt, for the ravens were excellent scouts, but lacked the strength to bring down large prey, a strength the wolves had in surplus.
The partnership between wolves and ravens was extremely successful and highly praised by the Allfather: The ravens scouted ahead, leading their prey to ambushes sprang by the wolves, who brought down the hunt, allowing for all the four companions to eat their fill.
When Odincreated the first humans, he told them to learn from the partnership between Geri, Freki, Hugin and Munin how to cooperate, hunt, care for their families and defend themselves, and thus they became teachers and later protectors of mankind.
