The Valknut (coined from Old Norse valr, "slain warriors" and knut, "knot") is a symbol consisting of three interlocked triangles. It symbolizes the power of Odin to bind and unbind the mind, unbinding his chosen warriors from tension and fear while binding his enemies so they become helpless in battle.
Odin tossed the great serpent Jörmungandr into the ocean that encircles Midgard, proving his power over all creation. The serpent, however, did not die, eventually growing so large that it was able to surround the earth and bite its own tail.
The serpent’s hold on its own tail is so strong and unrelenting that it became part of the tales of Ragnarök itself, for it is said that the twilight of the gods will begin when Jörmungandr releases her tail.
